Transmission
Dogs can contract canine distemper virus from all canines (including non-domestic species), and also their mothers if the virus is contracted while the mother is pregnant.
Treatment
Treatment usually requires fast, intensive veterinary medical intervention. In general, treatment will include hospitalization, placement of an intravenous catheter to replace fluid loss, aggressive antibiotic treatment, isolation, close monitoring of blood values to track progression of treatment, symptomatic medication for vomiting/diarrhea, and may include treatment later in life when the animal may appear in recovery such as anti-seizure medications, etc.
