Question: Will steroid shots make my dogs appetite increase? He is currently overweight, and had 2 acl surgeries within 1 year.,

ANSWER: Steroids (used for many things in veterinary medicine--but most commonly as an antiinflammatory or as a potent treatment for alleviating symptoms of allergies) have side effects--like almost any drug available on the market. The most common side effects seen in animals on steroids is increased appetite, increased thirst (drinking of water), and increased urination. Yes, animals will tend to gain weight on steroids (just like people do), and it our responsibility as pet owners to watch their intake and provide healthy alternatives (not more dog biscuits) to our pets and carefully monitor their weight. The 2 "acl" surgeries you are referring to are (ruptured anterior cruciate ligament surgery--referred to as "cranial or caudal cruciate" repair in veterinary lingo). Often these knee surgeries in which the ligaments rupture ARE due to overweight animals and it is unclear whether or not there is a genetic link to certain breeds. So, additional weight is NOT good for a dog with a history of knee surgeries as the additional weight can cause a break down of the surgical repair and a good exercise and weight loss program are a must--especially if the animal is on steroids. Have your vet help you develop a plan right for your dog! Good luck!
