Type of Pet: dalmation

Question:
I have a 8 year old dog who 5 months ago was diagnosed with diabetes. current treatment 15U NPH ILETIN I bid. Is currently blind as a result of cataract disease (blindness was rapid) Is there anything we can do to restore her sight that is not real expensive. I know people have cataract surgery..would a dog be up for that and who does the surgery? BS runs around 200's. Keep up the good work you are providing a great service!

ANSWER:
You will need to ask your own vet regarding the possibility of return of vision in your dog. It can be based on how long the dog has had diabetes and the extent of the cataract formation. Your vet can also recommend a visit to a veterinary ophthalmologist for a referral on the options and prognosis of various eye treatments that would fit your dog's specific medical condition. It sounds as if the diabetes is being well-managed if the blood glucose is in the 200's. Cataract formation may have already taken place in the earlier years (months) of the disease and may not be
reversable. Good luck!
