Question: My dog is has a skin problem and she has scabs all over her body. This skin problem also has a real bad odor. My dog is really uncomfortable. My question is: should I shave her or just wash her every day? Do you have any suggestions? J.O. San Diego, CA.

ANSWER: If your dog is uncomfortable and is suffering, why haven't you taken it in to a veterinarian up until now? Scabby skin and foul odors are not normal in dogs, just like they are not normal in people. Scabs can be from self-mutilation due to itching, parasitic infestation, allergies, fungal or bacterial infections, etc. Odor usually comes from a bacterial infection (probably of the skin in this case) but can be from many, many sources such as bad teeth (gum/tooth infections), tumors, infections within the ears, infection in the skin, problems with exocrine glands of the skin, hormonal imbalances, etc. None of these things are "normal" and shaving or bathing won't necessarily take away the problem. I suggest a veterinary visit ASAP and get that skin looked at!! Also your vet can start your animal on appropriate treatment so that it is no longer uncomfortable and suffering. Good luck!
