Question: My 1 yr. old puppy has elevated ALT levels, my vet wants to run
all sorts of tests. What could this be and should I be concerned?

ANSWER: Yes, you should always be concerned when a pet has an abnormality. Finding out the cause of this abnormality will lend itself to a diagnosis, a treatment plan, and a prognosis (how well will the animal do). So, by all means, you must get to the bottom of why this value (an enzyme found mostly in the liver but can be in other tissues) is increased in your pet. Causes can be a congenital liver problem (shunt), toxin exposure, primary liver problem, and more.
