Question: I have a cat that needs to lose weight and I understand that there are canned foods that make the cat feel full while eating less. Could you direct me in the right direction? J.O., Pompton Lakes, NJ.

ANSWER: First, a veterinary visit is advised to rule out medical causes of obesity such as diabetes mellitus/insipidus, hormonal problems, liver failure, heart disease and many other problems that can make an animal "appear" overweight when in fact it is a fluid problem, etc. At this visit, your veterinarian can assess the overall condition of your animal and just "how much" weight loss is necessary. Given this information, a prescription diet might be recommended and these usually result in more rapid weight loss--such as diets made by Hill's (the company that makes Science Diet) called R/D or W/D. These are not maintenance diets and your animal should be monitored during the time it is on any of these diets. Or, if obesity is not severe, your vet will be able to recommend a good, quality maintenance food that will aid in slower weight loss over time. Also, check your local Petco stores and ask a representative about quality foods that are lower in calories. Generally, I recommend a dry food diet (vs. canned) to help keep the animal's teeth in better condition. Good luck!
