Question: My cat has "dandruff"
all over her back close to her tail. It does not appear to bother
her, but I am concerned as to why she has it. How can I get rid
of it? Please advise. S.W. Phoenixville, PA.
ANSWER: This could just be dry skin--which can be related to diet, stress, or glandular problems. It could also be the presence of a type of mite called Cheyletiella which can go to people. Some animals will show itching and clinical signs of a problem, while others may not show any clinical signs of a problem. Once medical conditions are ruled out, a good diet is important in dry skin problems, and I usually recommend switching (gradually, over a week's time) to a diet that has the proper ratio of omega three fatty acids, such as Iams or Eukanuba. You may not see improvement for over a month in the haircoat. Bathing animals once a week in an oatmeal-based shampoo and conditioner (being sure to follow all label directions) will also help and these shampoos and diets can be found at local Petco stores in your area.
