It is recommended to have your pet's teeth professionally cleaned every year, just like it is in humans. One point to ponder is that animals don't brush their teeth on a daily basis, as most of us do, so tartar and plaque have more of a chance of forming. Tartar and plaque cause tooth decay, and eventual infection of the gums and bone beneath the teeth. This results in pain, tooth loss, and problems with the kidneys; liver and heart valves as bacteria get introduced into the bloodstream through the mouth. Routine dental cleanings and daily brushing of your pet's teeth will allow your pet to have a healthy, odor-free mouth and to keep its teeth well into its golden years.
There are new trends in Veterinary Dentistry that will soon be available to help those animals whose teeth have already become problematic. There is a new gel that when applied to the tooth pulp, will grow dentin, regenerate ligaments and cementum. Dentin is the hard portion of the tooth surrounding the pulp. Ligaments are necessary to hold the teeth in place and cementum is the covering, which cements the tooth to the ligament. This new gel is made up of BMP's (bone morphogenic proteins) and will be available within the next 2-5 years for use.
There are also new materials available for bone grafting (in severe periodontal disease). New digital radiology is coming out to make diagnosing problems with bone disease/periodontal disease easier, faster, and safer by requiring less anesthesia time for the procedure. The use of laser surgical units have become widely used in surgeries involving the mouth leading to faster recovery, less pain, and less bleeding.
Ask your vet to show you how to properly care for your pet's
teeth, such as proper brushing techniques, pet toothpastes, scheduling
routine dental
cleanings, and having regular dental check ups.
