Men, women and children that are involved in physically or emotionally abusive relationships can turn to "safehouses" which are places to go to get help and get themselves together and on the right track! These houses provide a safe place for people to go by being discreet, plain, and only available by word-of-mouth, etc. They change locations often, preventing people from being able to "track" another person, etc. But, what happens to the pets in these situations?
Well, now there is an answer! The University of Missouri-Columbia's veterinary college has created a new "safehouse" for pets whose owners are dealing with a physically abusive relationship! The program is called PetSafe and came about from reviewing cases of animal abuse that required veterinary records from the hospital. It is believed that a frightened person will not leave an abusive situation for fear that the pet will incur the wrath of the abusive person. MU Pet Assisted Love and Support (PALS) group has been considering this type of organization for some time, modeling their program after a similar program at Purdue University. The program is staffed by volunteers. Animals must be referred to the organization by appropriate government or social services to ensure that the property authorities are aware of the entire situation, says the university.
Shouldn't we all have a safe place to go when we are endangered? See what you can do in your community to get this started everywhere!
