Prairie Dogs as Pets

By Dr. Kelly Brodnik

Prairie dogs are also becoming very popular pets. In the wild, they eat grasses, but in captivity they can be fed high quality rabbit pellets, fresh grass, timothy hay, and should be given fresh fruits and grains occasionally as treats. Don't feed your prairie dogs a main diet of fruits and grains even though they prefer them because they can become obese! No one wants a fat, unhealthy prairie dog! Timothy hay can be fed free-choice (available at all times) to control hunger.

Remember wild prairie dogs are not pets and can carry rabies, fleas, the plague and many other nasty diseases. Always make sure to get your pet from a reputable source.
