Well it is about that time of year again that we all find ourselves outdoors more, playing with our pets, our children and our environment. One of the most common problems that I see (besides removing porcupine quills, fish hooks, and treating snake bites) are what to do about a stinky animal that lost a battle with a skunk?
There are many remedies such as shampoos, tomato juice baths, baking soda, sprays, perfumes, etc available over the counter at most pet stores. There are also many "tried and true" home remedies concocted by those who have "been there, done that". I recently read an article in a baby magazine about what to do if your child should be sprayed by a skunk and it offered the following advice (changed to incorporate animals instead of children): Sponge down the animal with vinegar (taking great care to avoid eyes and delicate tissues), then lather it up with a good grease-cutting dish soap and rinse again, thoroughly. Then, lather up with a quality dog shampoo, rinse again. Use a conditioner to help restore moisture to the fur and then apply a lightly scented perfume spray or cologne made for animals-taking care not to use in animals with sensitivities or allergies.
I must say, in my experience, time is the best cure for calming the after effects of being "skunked"! Not to mention keeping your pets on leashes and supervised in areas that may house such malodorous creatures!
