Detecting Illness in Reptiles

By Dr. Kelly Brodnik

Reptile care involves careful handling, proper nutrition for the species, and proper husbandry. The best ammunition against disease is prevention and the key to prevention is knowledge of what is normal and abnormal for your particular reptile.

The following is a partial list of signs and symptoms of possible illness/disease in reptiles:

-Listlessness

-Anorexia/not eating

-Unusual behavior (hiding, aggression, etc.)

-Abnormal droppings

-Heat seeking behavior (remaining in basking spot for extended periods

-Animal in same position as when last checked

-Difficulty breathing

-Abnormal swellings

-Abnormal discharge

-The presence of parasites or abnormal larvae/bugs/insects within housing

-Any blood anywhere that comes from the reptile (not its prey)

-Any reptile that appears to have lost weight or skin has become wrinkled

-Any new lesion/mass/scab/rash/wound etc should be checked out immediately

The first mode of treatment is to isolate the animal in a properly prepared environment and take it to a veterinarian that specializes or has experience in handling the type of reptile that you own. Knowledge of diseases common to particular reptiles is very helpful in getting the right treatment for your pet. Here are a few suggested readings:
