Here are some topics currently being funded for research in cats, according to DVM Newsmagazine, February 2000.

The problem of chronic bacterial problems in multiple cat households, nonsurgical alternative treatment for cats suffering from hyperthyroidism, and nonsurgical alternative treatments for cats suffering from hyperthyroidism being conducted at the University of California-Davis.

Colorado State University will be studying and researching Restrictive Cardiomyopathy (a type of heart disease) and possible drug treatment for cats along with alternative dietary treatments in cats diagnosed with diabetes.

The National Cancer Institute is looking for genetic markers for the development of cancer in cats, meanwhile Texas A&M is researching the use of pain-relief medication through the use of a skin patch, in which the medication is absorbed over time through the skin at a steady rate.

The development of a new diagnostic test for cats with pancreatitis (an inflammatory problem of the pancreas, an organ in the abdomen) is being conducted at the Animal Medical Center and a possible connection between Calicivirus and urinary tract disease in cats is being studied at Michigan State University

Many other research projects and studies are being done at these universities and institutions involving many other pets on a daily basis. This list is not all-inclusive by any means!
