Canine Pregnancy Blood Test
By Dr. Kelly Brodnik
How many times have you been told that there is no blood test
for pregnancy in dogs? Humans have one, along with urine tests,
etc., so why not dogs?
That's exactly what the people at Synbiotics Corporation
thought when they began developing the new ReproCHEK pregnancy
blood test for dogs. According to printed material about ReproCHEK,
the test is designed to test for relaxin, a hormone that is produced
when the fertilized egg is implanted. It generally takes about
21-25 days following fertilization for the egg to implant and
produce detectable levels of relaxin in the blood stream. Relaxin
hormone remains in the bloodstream during pregnancy and can also
be an indicator if the pregnancy is lost or spontaneously aborted.
With this new technology, it is possible to tell if planned mating
was successful, and also to tell if unplanned pregnancy has occurred.
This new test also helps rule out "false pregnancy"
that can occur in females exhibiting signs of pregnancy that are
not actually pregnant.
Now you can know if your female dog is pregnant or not, within
25 days after mating. The test involves drawing a blood sample
from your pet and waiting approximately 20 minutes for test results!
It couldn't be easier! Other reliable forms of pregnancy tests
are ultrasound, xrays, and physical examination performed by an
experienced veterinarian. Pregnant animals should be under the
supervised care of your veterinarian. Xrays and ultrasound are
often used in combination with ReproCHEK in order to determine
the number of fetuses (feti) that are present. Ask your veterinarian
about ReproCHEK today!
