Hedgehogs have become a popular pet recently, so I thought I would share some basic information about them for those of you who own one or are contemplating owning one. They are nocturnal, meaning that they are most active at night and sleep a lot during the day. So, if you want something that is entertaining during the day, you might want to look at other possibilities. Or, if you are bothered by things that go "creek" in the night, you may want to make it's home in another room besides your bedroom. Their life expectancy is 7-10 years, so do not purchase one if you are not able to commit to taking care of it for its lifetime.
Their diet mainly consists of dog food, fruits and chopped vegetables, crickets, mealworms, and waxworms. Fresh water is a must at all times. They need to be kept at a fairly warm temperature, between 75-80 degrees Fahrenheit. If they are kept in temperatures less than 75 degrees, they tend to develop many problems; including upper respiratory infections (colds). They need to be examined by your veterinarian should they show any signs of infection (runny eyes, runny nose, sneezing, coughing, not eating, diarrhea, etc.). Hedgehogs can carry parasites such as intestinal worms and also some skin parasites are fairly common such as mites. All of these can be treated by your veterinarian and some are transmissible to humans (just like they are in dogs and cats) so make sure to have your hedgehog examined immediately upon purchasing your pet.
When purchasing your hedgehog, make sure to make or purchase
a box that is big enough for it to hide in during the day. Newspaper
bedding is ideal for the bottom of the cage. Also, the most important
purchase you can make is a book about the care and feeding of
hedgehogs to familiarize yourself with their needs. Check PETCO
stores for food and supplies and try Amazon.com for books on hedgehogs. The
