New Ear Mite Treatment Available from Veterinarians

By Dr. Kelly Brodnik

The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has recently approved a new ear suspension called ACAREXX that will treat adult ear mites in cats and kittens as young as 4 weeks of age. The best new concept about this type of ear mite medication, for those whom have ever treated ear mites in a cat before, is that this new product only requires a single application, according to IDEXX Blue Ridge Pharmaceuticals.

The new ear solution is designed to be used in pre-measured vials, and treatment requires no pre-cleaning of the ears. The formula is non-greasy compared to other ear mite products, and the manufacturer claims it does not contain irritating solvents (a plus when medicating a not-so-happy cat with sore, itchy ears)!

One of the best qualities listed by the manufacturer is that this product has been proven safe for kittens as young as 4 weeks old, which previously had no very little options, with very few side effects. The effects of treatment against eggs and immature stages has not been proven, as well as the use of this product in pregnant or lactating queens. ACAREXX is only available through licensed veterinarians and is a prescription product.
