From great coffee table picture books about any animal you can imagine to educational and fun books for kids, and practical care guides on caring for a new pet. Amazon.com has them all! Even Rover benefits with great books on traveling with your pets, and educating children on the proper care of animals. Here are some of the best of what I have found regarding pet animals, I hope you like them!
This book is a must have for children that are receiving or already have a puppy or pet dog. The book is very user-friendly, fun to read, and is mostly pictures. The larger print makes it easy to read and the photos make it very easy to follow. This book is written by a veterinarian and covers many topics from: how to choose a puppy, training your puppy, exercising your puppy, how to feed your puppy and when, types of dogs, visiting the veterinarian, and how to keep your puppy happy and healthy. The instructions are simple and the photographs are of a child showing each step of the process-much like a cookbook for caring for your pet! Great book, great price!
This book has all of the same attributes as the above, only covers kitten and cat-related topics such as: where and when to get a kitten, feeding and grooming your cat, cat's behavior and what it means, types of cats, indoor vs. outdoor cats, visiting the veterinarian, and how to keep your cat/kitten happy and healthy. It shows step-by-step color photos of how to clean the litterbox, explains why cats' tongues are prickly, and what it means when their pupils dilate. The book does an excellent job explaining cats and kittens. Well-written, easy to read fun to follow.
**NOTE**ASPCA puts out similar books about rabbits and guinea pigs that are equally as valuable as a source of education and reference for your child in the care of their pets!
This book is a guide to specific dog breeds. The dogs are listed by breed with descriptions of their sizes, weights, general appearance, country of origin, and history. In addition to this valuable information, there is a brightly colored photograph of each breed next to its information. It also lists fun facts about the breed. An excellent book for children that like or own dogs! (A nice reference book for adults, as well!)
Tired of pet sitting for friends and neighbors? Wish you could take Fido and Fluffy with you, not to mention saving on boarding/kennel fees? The next book is for you or the animal lover that travels and would like to take your pet with you:
This book is more than a vacation guide to places where you can stay with your pet. Not only does it list hotels, motel, inns, lodges, cabins, bed & breakfasts, ranches, etc., but it also gives over 23,000 accommodations that accept pets, along with approximate prices, and even their telephone numbers-so you can call them direct. This book also covers basic obedience commands, carsickness, the importance of pet identification, airline hints & suggestions, first aid emergency treatment, animal-related poems & sayings, a recipe for dog biscuits, and even a list of how to take the stress out of your vacations. Of all of the books I have reviewed, this one is my vote for "BEST OVERALL GIFT BOOK"
This book is much like the books out there available for naming your baby, but it includes names that are common for pets (and not for human babies) such as "BEAR"- which according to the authors, means "Hibernation is a favorite pastime. Good name for breeds that resemble bear cubs such as Akitas, Chow Chows, and Great Pyreneese". This book not only is great for name selection but also is humorous to read by itself, when reading the "definitions" of some of the names. Now, if your dog's name is Piranha we can all guess as to how it got its name!
This book is a good reference book for first-time (and seasoned) dog owners, alike. It discusses important aspects of owning a dog or puppy and begins with choosing a dog that fits your lifestyle. It discusses the importance of diet and exercise, along with housetraining and basic obedience. Theories behind dog behavior, tips on health and safety, along with grooming hints are all a part of this wonderful book. There is also a guide to breeds in the back of the book, which makes for a good reference when selecting a dog or puppy. It is always best to know exactly what you are committing to when obtaining your pet and this book lays it out very simply and very well.
This is the best book I have seen for everything to do with cats! It talks about basic care from choosing a kitten, to selecting the appropriate collar and leash. It discusses the difference between having a cat that stays strictly indoors vs. an outdoor cat. Feeding and nutritional needs, along with grooming, coat types, shorthair vs. long, and even about bathing a cat! There is a section on problems with cats such as stress, how to deal with unwanted behaviors and a whole section devoted to health care for cats and kittens. The section on health care has a systematic review of problems focusing on specific areas, such as a section on skin/coat problems, eye problems, ear problems, upper respiratory problems, digestive or reproductive problems, and many, many more. The book discusses reproduction and breeding in cats, as well as emergency first aid treatment for cats. The last section is devoted to those who love to show cats and are part of the catshow industry. This book is a MUST HAVE for any cat owner or lover. Very comprehensive and very easy to read. A nice reference manual.
